GSK Talking Points 2010

It might be election night, but the GSK Talking Points in Dentistry 2010 series is now well under way and visits Watford tonight, following Southampton and London earlier in the week.

Roy Higson, Mike Wanless and John Tiernan then move on to Falkirk, Newcastle, Leeds, Bolton and Solihul before finally finishing in Bristol on the 20th May, just in time for the big BSOS meeting of the year at Stratford-upon-Avon with Okeson and Tanaka.

If you don’t have tickets, it’s too late, they sold out weeks ago. Anyone going to Leeds will have to suffer sharing the place with 10 of our practice staff – do come over and say “hello”!

Occlusal adjustment using the bite plate-induced occlusal position as a reference position for temporomandibular disorders: a pilot study

April 29, 2010 Leave a comment

It is just a pilot, but here is a Japanese study where 21 TMD patients have been treated with occlusal equilibration to what we would call “CR” (centric relation) and they call “BPOP” (bite plate-induced occlusal position).

They found a significant reduction in symptoms, but sadly there was no control group, so we don’t know if they would have improved by the same amount following appliance therapy but without equilibration. The authors do, however, suggest that it adds weight to the indications for a randomly controlled clinical trial, so hopefully we will see a more useful paper at a later date. Read more…

ARS – Treatment Planning Day – July 31st 2010

April 1, 2010 Leave a comment

This year’s Advanced Restorative Seminars (ARS) course begins with the Treatment Planning Day on Saturday 31st July 2010.

Patients are not needed for this session, but delegates must bring full mouth radiographs, mounted study casts, completed TMD Questionnaire and Occlusal Screening Questionnaire, full periodontal charting and medical history. Technicians from Waters Edge Ceramics will also be present as they will need to plan the laboratory elements at each stage well in advance.

It is expected that the clinical sessions will commence in September 2010, but these will be finalised following consultation with the delegates, their patients, the laboratory and Graham Browning’s practice!

Only 3 places remain, so if you’re interested the time to act is NOW!

June Intro 2 Course Fully Subscribed

April 1, 2010 Leave a comment

The last remaining place in the Introduction to Occlusion Part 2 course planned for June 5th/6th at Wakefield has just been taken, so we will be operating a reserve list and planning the next dates and venues for the course.

Dr Roy Higson teaching at the Academy of Clinical ExcellenceWe will be continuing the policy of offering Part 1 (the distance learning modules) free for anyone booking Part 2 beyond the previous April 15th cut-off for those reserving places for the next course.

The fairest way to achieve this is for delegates to sign up and pay for for Part 1 and allow the full cost of Part 1 as a discount against Part 2 booked at any time in the future. As soon as we have the new dates and venues in the diary I will produce a revised booking form.

Correlation between Stress and Sleep Bruxism

Correlation between stress, stress-coping and current sleep bruxism

This interesting paper, just published online in the Head & Face Medicine journal, studies the relationship between stress and sleep bruxism.

We are, I’m sure, all fairly confident in this association, based on our clinical experience. There is, however, still a lack of decent evidence for a causal relationship between stress and sleep bruxism.

This paper does add another level of confidence in that association, but the authors still fall short of claiming that this is evidence of a direct causal relationship. It’s worth a read though and may be useful for those of you who see patients on referral from GPs, neurologists, etc.- download the full article free here:

3D Head and Neck Anatomy for Dentistry DVD-ROM

March 26, 2010 Leave a comment

oral cavity illustration

I’ve only just installed this new DVD-ROM on my iMac, but I can already tell you it’s the new “must have” for all dentists, especially anyone with an interest in the anatomy and function of the muscles of mastication and the TMJs.

The impressive roll call of authors includes Prof Patricia Reynolds, Director of Flexible Learning at King’s Dental Institute, along with Barry Berkovitz and Bernie Moxham, who had the difficult task of teaching me 2nd BDS anatomy and physiology in the 1970s at Bristol Dental School. They have also published a number of beautifully illustrated and very popular dental anatomy and physiology text books over the years.

Here’s the link to the web site:

http://www.primalpictures.com/3D_Head_Neck_Anatomy_for_Dentistry.aspx

Priced at £180 this is something of a bargain for a very comprehensive DVD-ROM (PC and Mac compatible) of this quality. I can’t begin to imagine the number of potential uses there are for this product, but it will be invaluable not only for dentists’ own education, and also a great aid to communicating with dental nurses, hygienists and, most importantly perhaps, patients.

Roy and I use many of the animations  already in our lectures, but there are some new ones included here that will make to job of explaining the anatomy and function of the masticatory system considerably easier in the future. What will be particularly invaluable though will be the chance for our delegates to review what they have learned back at home or in the practice.
