Occlusal adjustment using the bite plate-induced occlusal position as a reference position for temporomandibular disorders: a pilot study
It is just a pilot, but here is a Japanese study where 21 TMD patients have been treated with occlusal equilibration to what we would call “CR” (centric relation) and they call “BPOP” (bite plate-induced occlusal position).
They found a significant reduction in symptoms, but sadly there was no control group, so we don’t know if they would have improved by the same amount following appliance therapy but without equilibration. The authors do, however, suggest that it adds weight to the indications for a randomly controlled clinical trial, so hopefully we will see a more useful paper at a later date. Read more…
Occlusion Series on the “Dentinal Tubules” Web Site
I have been asked to write a series of articles on occlusion for the Dentinal Tubules online community of dentists.
The first article in the series relates to the use of the SDS Occlusal Screening Questionnaire and can be found here:

ARS – Treatment Planning Day – July 31st 2010
This year’s Advanced Restorative Seminars (ARS) course begins with the Treatment Planning Day on Saturday 31st July 2010.
Patients are not needed for this session, but delegates must bring full mouth radiographs, mounted study casts, completed TMD Questionnaire and Occlusal Screening Questionnaire, full periodontal charting and medical history. Technicians from Waters Edge Ceramics will also be present as they will need to plan the laboratory elements at each stage well in advance.
It is expected that the clinical sessions will commence in September 2010, but these will be finalised following consultation with the delegates, their patients, the laboratory and Graham Browning’s practice!
Only 3 places remain, so if you’re interested the time to act is NOW!
June Intro 2 Course Fully Subscribed
The last remaining place in the Introduction to Occlusion Part 2 course planned for June 5th/6th at Wakefield has just been taken, so we will be operating a reserve list and planning the next dates and venues for the course.
We will be continuing the policy of offering Part 1 (the distance learning modules) free for anyone booking Part 2 beyond the previous April 15th cut-off for those reserving places for the next course.
The fairest way to achieve this is for delegates to sign up and pay for for Part 1 and allow the full cost of Part 1 as a discount against Part 2 booked at any time in the future. As soon as we have the new dates and venues in the diary I will produce a revised booking form.
